Aquatic Ecosystems- Educational Programme and Outreach
INSTITUTE FOR OCEAN MANAGEMENT
Anna University offers educational programmes on fisheries, aquaculture and tourism through curriculum and syllabus. The Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS) offers educational programme in B.E. Geoinformatics on ‘Oceanography and Coastal Processes’ and M.E. Remote Sensing and Geomatics on ‘Geomatics for Ocean Coastal Zone Management’. The Department of Civil Engineering provides educational programme in ‘Coastal Engineering’ and ‘Coastal Zone Management’ for B.E Civil Engineering. The Institute for Ocean Management (IOM) offers educational programme in M.Tech. Ocean Technology on “Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology, Marine and Coastal Resources Management, Socio Economic Aspects of Coastal Management and Coastal Ecosystem and Biodiversity”. IOM has also conducted Questionnaire surveys to local communities to create awareness about mangrove ecosystem, plastic pollution and marine litter. IOM organised various educational programmes through webinars and expert lectures related to fisheries, aquaculture and ocean wealth covering SDG 14 (Life below Water). IOM has also participated in coastal cleanup drive to make people aware of sustainable management of tourism. IOM published “Coast track” newsletters quarterly related to sustainable management of ocean under SDG 14. IOM creates and uploads knowledge products under “Kids corner” and “Poster” sections related to Ports, Fishes and Corals. IOM also prepares thematic maps and information based on SDG 14 covering Fish landing centres, Salt marsh areas and Mudflat regions, Distribution of Corals and Mangrove areas, Lagoons and Estuaries, Beaches and Ports.

Outreach activities
Institute for Ocean Management, Anna University, Chennai - EIACP PC Resource Partner of Centre for Coastal Zone Management and Coastal Shelter Belt conducted a Field Survey on Mangrove Ecosystem at Pulicat Lake Tiruvallur District on 27.08.2022. IOM EIACP PC RP Team visited the mangrove site near Kosasthalaiyar River in Pulicat, Tiruvallur. IOM EIACP team has prepared and conducted questionnaire survey on mangrove ecosystem to create awareness about its importance to environment among the fisherman’s community.


In commemoration of “World Fisheries Day 2022”, IOM EIACP PC RP has organised a webinar about “Entrepreneurship and Livelihood options in Coastal Aquaculture” on 24.11.2022. The webinar was delivered by Dr. Akshya Panigrahi, Principal Scientist from ICAR-CIBA, Chennai. Around forty three participants joined this webinar. It was an interactive session where the participants asked their questions regarding the subject and got the answers in real time.


Er. B. Prabhakaran, Logistics Consultant, CEG Alumnus gave an expert lecture on “The Role of Indian Ocean in Boosting the India’s Wealth” on 09.06.2023 at Koodal hall which was organised by IOM. M.Tech students and IOM staff members have participated in this event.

Anna University offers educational outreach activities for local and national communities to raise awareness about overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices through e-posters. IOM has published several e-posters to commemorate the Environmental days such as Shark Awareness Day, International Whale Shark Day, International Sawfish Day, World Aquatic Animal Day and World Turtle Day on the official website of IOM EIACP. The e-posters can help to raise awareness about endangered species of aquatic animals and unregulated fishing practices including overfishing and illegal fishing to the public community.
